These readers are now "the great fans" of John Chow and I am one of them reading, digesting and applying what he blogs in his blogs. We can find in some of these blogs the shadows of John Chow Dot Com with respects to the format, ad placement, color scheme, etc.

I am a relatively new blogger. I came across John Chow Dot Com some time in September 2006. I remember my first impression when I came across this blog. Um, the name John Chow Dot Com is good title. It is simple and easy to remember. It shows John's great confidence in himself, his own name, knowledge, know-how, presentation and application. The blog format is simple, neat and concise. People visiting the blog can find what they want readily. My second impression is from the red corvette. I asked myself is this blog related to race cars or may be an auto-maniac on the driving seat of this little blog. But, this impression gone swiftly as my eyes was caught by the tab "Who Is John Chow".

I checked on the tab and was hooked by the brief and lively description about John. I began
to like this blogger.... a cool man with lot of passion caring for the living beings in his surrounding.
I read more about John in his blog about Techzone and Techmedia. He is a "big shot" yet so humble and eager to help those who may need help.

I bookmarked this "John Chow Dot Com" and from then I read this blog daily. Actually I check it out
several times every day. I like his Top Posts I am an eary batch baby boomer and I am now hooked with blogs .... reading them, blogging them, improving them along the continued learning journey. I enjoy reading John's blog. The reason is the personal touch which are missing in most of today's blogs. In his writing. John seems very close to me when I read his blog. It is a feeling of sharing his precious knowledge and valuable experience which he let people shared unselfishly.

What he earned from his blog in 2006 he distributed them to his church and the world non-profit organization for the kids and people who are less fortunate, In these days, I don't find this helpful attitude around our neighbour, friends and co-workers.
Lastly, I wish the seeds of love and caring for others which John planted on the blogging field will grow
on our global village.

Google Adsense Tips - 6 Theories At Work

1. Less is More

I believe the theory behind this lies within the visitor's experience at a website. If you serve up let's say... a 728x90 leaderboard, and a 160x60 side block, and maybe even an extra ad unit or link unit then you aren't just showing the top-paying ads, you're also showing a lot of the ads with lower values too. This is especially painful if your site only triggers ads in the $2 range. These low-paying keywords can be a distraction to the visitor and while the recommended "slop of gravy on top with a side of mashed potatoes" (describing sites using the 728x90 and 160x60 ad blocks on a page) has often been touted as the best placement for Adsense, it is being proven by many to not be all that tasty. Why? Because these ads are "outside" of your content, not within it. When Adsense ads are placed within the body of content, it generally performs better for many. I have seen this myself in testing different Adsense placement methods. One site I own jumped in CTR by 10% when I removed the full meal deal and opted for a small 468x60 text ad block within the body of my content.

2. Keyword Density

While Google doesn't reveal the specifics on the methods behind their Adsense madness, most people have learned through experimentation that keyword density plays a significant role. Adsense does rely on the content to determine which ads to show, and they want their ads to be shown. It would also appear that content towards the top of your page has a greater influence over the ads. It's almost a passive way of forcing Adsense users to boost their keyword density to not only show the most relevant ads, but to improve search engine positioning which improves the chances of those ads being seen. Perhaps an underhanded means of thumbing their nose to MSN, which seems to feed on keyword loaded sites these days propelling many an Adsense website into it's top rankings. Either that, or I've been watching too many shows about conspiracy theories.

3. Less is More - or More is More?

Another theory is that using fewer internal links on your webpage gives visitors fewer "click-away" options, thus improving chances of them clicking on Adsense ads. If you have 20 links on your page and let's say 4 of them being within a 728x90 ad block, then visitors still have 16 other links to choose from beside the meager 4 Adsense links. Keep only 5 links on the page, and they now have only 9 links to choose from other than Adsense ads. Add more Adsense ads, such as a block containing 5 more links carefully weaved into your content (such as a 336x280), and they now have a better chance of getting clicked on with a ratio of 9:9. Taking it a step further, you could also factor other numbers into the equation such as : percentage of page scanned before clicking away, percentage of page scanned before scrolling, number of average scrolls per page to predict good places to place ads, etc. The odds can definitely be in your favour with this tactic. I haven't aggressively tested this theory yet and with a blog this is certainly not an option, but I have noticed on another site I own this might explain the 20-40% CTR I'm seeing on pages where all internal links are at the bottom of the page.

4. Using Images Next To Ads

While it's reported that Adsense doesn't like images placed next to ads which appear to be served by Google, this has been proven by many to boost CTR incredibly. And because these images are different than those which caused the worldwide pandemic of "banner blindness", people are more likely to notice them. It really just makes sense. Human beings are visual creatures. From the time we were monkeys popping our heads over the grass to see if a lion was coming our way, our eyes have always been our first tool in evaluating a situation, and of course, checking out other monkeys. But back to Adsense... even more effective is when you use images that illustrate the content of the page. I've used this trick and find it reallly works well.

5. Font Type and Size

This was announced on the official Adsense Blog recently and it's a great tip. Adjust your page's font and size to match Adsense ads can greatly boost CTR. This could be difficult if your site has a lot of static pages, but a simple batch search & replace tool can help you speed things up. Now figuring out what the matching font is has been a chore for many.
I believe (through trial and error) that the font used mainly in Adsense ads is Arial, size: 11px
A number of people have reported that they've witnessed Adsense ads conforming to their page's CSS font styles. If anything is occurring here, I'm willing to take a guess that Adsense ads might be able to adapt to a very limited number of fonts and if you happen to use one of those fonts on the page, it will change accordingly. But as I said, if this is true than I think it's limited. After all, have you ever seen an Adsense ad in FontLeroyBrown 20px?

6. Test, test, test

Nearly everyone agrees that Adsense is only as effective as the unique way you integrate it into your website. What works for one person may not work for another. While there are some basic principles which are great starting points for any website, your design and content is unique and therefore visitor behaviour will be unique. Your best results will come through experimentation and patience.

I can relate to her original focus on building huge sites (that have no traffic). For me this comes from the fact that building a site is completely under my control. But, the best site with no traffic makes no money. She emphasized the key point, product pages on my sites need inbound links to get traffic, and then make money. If you are looking for a “magic” solution that will let you push a button and see cash coming in within a day or two with no effort on your part, then the answer is no. This product, well-written and useful as it may be, is no different from any other good idea. You have to do a bit of work to make it earn money for you. But if you spend an hour or two with this ebook, give it a bit of thought and don’t mind putting in a few days of hard work, then yes, it can earn money for you, and a lot of it, at that. Hour 3

Once you've found a lucrative niche, it's time to look for its relevant keywords. Run a search of the topic at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordSandbox to get a list of related keywords and keyphrases. Keep a copy of this list.

Hour 4

Open an account with a free blogging site. Or, if you already have your own website, download the Wordpress software at www.wordpress.com . It's free. And Wordpress can be easily integrated with any website.

Set up your account. Fiddle with the controls. You'll discover that using a blog is as easy as writing down your thoughts and clicking on a button to publish them for all the online world to see.

Hour 5

Enroll in any affiliate program of your choice. You could choose more than one, of course. Just make sure that such program is offering some products that cater to the niche you have chosen. Try to find a program that offers highly sellable products and generous commissions. Don't settle for a commission rate of less than 20%. Look for something that would give you at least 40% for every successful sale you would be able to refer. A good place to start is www.clickbank.com , but eventually you would want to "graduate" to something grander. But for your initial foray, ClickBank would suffice.

After enrollment, you would be able to immediately choose the products you want to pre-sell. Get the affiliate links for them. Do not lose these affiliate links.

Hour 6

It's time to put that blog to good use! The premise heart of this budget-friendly strategy is your blog. Blogs are excellent and cost-effective alternatives to websites. Search engines love them, and they have their own linking network as well. Also, they are easily updatable, and search engine spiders love consistently updated content.

Write an interesting piece about the niche you have chosen. It may be a personal review of one of your affiliate products, or your views on the niche in general.

The trick here lies in being able to strategically insert your affiliate links in your blog entries. It must be subtle. You won't want your blog to look like a blatant sales page. Your entries should be highly informative, first and foremost. Content is still king, and it is what will drive visitors to your site.

Hour 7

Go to www.pingomatic.com . Ping the blog directories and the search engines that can be found there. This would inform their spiders that your content has been updated, and they will check it out come the next relevant query. What does this mean? Fast indexing for your blog site!

So there you go. A zero dollar, seven hour marketing plan that would rake in some earnings. It doesn't stop there, however. Try to post a new entry everyday, and ping the search engines afterwards. Soon enough, you'll have a high traffic blog site where you could expose your affiliate links to a whole lot of people!

Blogging for More Traffic and AdSense Profit !

My adsense is picking up in terms of more relevant adsense ads from Google to my web pages especially the blogs. The blog pages attract relevant Google AdSense ads more readily than the normal web pages.

I also use more social bookmarkings. They include Blinklist, Reddit, Furl, Digg, del.icio.us. I found it more easy and ready to use by adding them to the Yahoo toolbar or Google toolbar. Just click and drag the icon and drop it to the tool bar and it is there ready to serve whenever you need it.

The number of click through has increased as traffic is picking up with the blog network of 12 blogs and social bookmarkings. They all tied in with my niche websites hence backing up the niche websites with daily updates which the search engines spiders are interested to look for.

Of course I use Google Adwords also. It is very effective. But very expensive. The sale/revenue ratio is not profitable ... short term. Anyway I still continue using Google Adword for the instant exposure and feedback to my web pages in terms of clicks. The CTR is double digits.

However, I limit my bids to maximum 5 cent/bid.

I think I could still do much better if I could further enhance the website traffic.

Now (of course) there are other ways the Internet is used too. However, primarily, the Internet is an information delivery medium. It is NOT a "sell" medium (even though that happens). It's simply a matter of identifying the mediums marketing "logic" to work out how best to use it to sell on it. In essence people on the Internet are looking for content that is relevant to their purpose, need or problem. They typically are not looking for marketing ploys. Now, there are a number of ways to increase this content, Including having a search engine optimization company provide you with keyword rich articles. There are three primary reasons why more web site content increases your web site traffic. The first reason more web site content increases traffic to your web site is that content articles tend to be focused on a specific topic. This focus will naturally lead to the repeated use of a specific keyword or phrase. The natural and repeated use of this phrased leads to higher search engine rankings, naturally. Search engine rankings are the way findings/ results come back to an Internet user when they search for a 'solution to their problem' via a search engine. If someone searches for the term dogs they will get many millions of pages of results. The order in which these results are displayed on the screen depends on a number of factors including how frequently the term is mentioned on the site and where it is mentioned on the site, and the exact phrase the user typed into the search field on their favorite Search Engine. This could mean that something like ninety percent of all Internet users seeing your web site in any one given Internet session for a specific key phrase. The second reason more web site content increases traffic is more complicated. If you have strong, well written content on your site, you increase your credibility with customers. Suddenly you are no longer a company selling homemade dog food; you are somebody who can offer knowledgeable advice about anything a responsible dog owner needs to know including house training, leash laws, and sleeping problems. A lot has changed since then, and now is the time to consider a new 26-step plan that meets the current needs of webmasters in 2006. Some of the old ones still apply (writing new content everyday, for example), and some don't (submitting to the search engines is no longer necessary), and we're here to tell you which is which! As you probably already know, bringing in traffic is not easy - it takes hard work, determination and lots of elbow grease. So if you're ready, roll up your sleeves and follow these 26 simple steps, and within just one year you will generate enough traffic to keep you busy for a long, long time! A) Keyword research Before you do anything else, use a keyword research tool and do an extensive job researching the right keyphrases to use for your site. What keyphrases are your direct competitors using? Are there any keyphrases that create a potential for market entry? Are there any that you can put a spin on and create a whole new niche with? B) Domain name If you want to brand your company name, then choose a domain name that reflects it. If your company is Kawunga, then get www.kawunga.com. If it's taken, then get www.kawungawidgets.com. No dashes, and no more than two words in the domain if appropriate. C) Avoid the sandbox Buy your domain name early, as soon as you have chosen your keyphrases and your company name. Get it hosted right away and put up a quick one page site saying a little about who you are, what you sell, and that there will be more to come soon. Make sure it gets crawled by Google and Yahoo (either submit it or link to it from another site). D) Create content Create over 30 pages of real, original content on your site. This will give the spiders something to chew on. It will also give you more opportunities to been seen in the search engine results for a wide variety of keyphrases. E) Site design Use the "Keep It Simple" principle. Employ an external CSS file, clean up any Java Scripts by referring to them off the page in an external file, don't use frames, use flash the way you would an image, and no matter what, do not create a flash site. Do not offer a busy site with lots of bells and whistles to your visitors. Keep things nice and simple. Make it easy for them to find what they are looking for and they'll have no reason to look anywhere else. F) Page size The less kilobytes your page uses, the better - especially for the home page. Optimize your images and make sure the page loads quickly. Most people and businesses in the Western world may have high speed, but cell phones and other countries might not. If your site loads slowly, you may have already lost your visitor before they've even had a chance to browse around. G) Usability Make sure that your site follows good usability rules. Remember that people spend more time on other sites, so don't violate design conventions. Don't use PDF files for online reading. Change the colours for visited links, and use good headers. Look up usability for more tips and tricks, it will be worth your while. H) On site optimization Use the keyphrase you have chosen in your title (most important), your headers (when appropriate), and within the text. Make sure that your page/content is ABOUT your keyphrase. If you are selling widgets, than write about widgets. Don't just stick the word widgets into the text. I) Globals Globals are the links that remain the same on every page. They are the reference for new visitors to keep them from getting lost. Sometimes they are on the left of the page, sometimes they consist of tabs at the top. Often they are in the footer of the page as well. Make sure that you have an old style text version of your globals on every page. I usually create tabs at the top, and put the text versions in the footer at the bottom of the page. Find out what works best for you. J) Headers Use bold headers. On the Internet, people scan they don't read. So initially, all they will see are the headers. If your headers don't address their concerns, they won't stick around long enough to read your content. Use appropriate keyphrases when you can. K) Site map Build a site map with a link to each of your pages. Keep it up to date. This will allow the spiders to get to every page. Put a text link to the site map on the main pages. L) Content Add a page every 2-3 days: 200-500 words. Create original content, don't copy others. The more original and useful it is, the more people will read it, link to it, and most importantly of all - like it enough to keep coming back for more. M) White hat only Stay away from black hat optimizing techniques. Black hat optimization consists of using any method to get higher rankings that the search engines would disapprove of, such as keyword stuffing, doorway pages, invisible text, cloaking and more. Stick to white hat methods for long-term success. People who use black hat optimization are usually there for the short-term, such as in porn, gambling, and Viagra markets (just look at your email spam for more black hat markets). These black hat industry sites are usually around just long enough to make a quick buck. N) Competition analysis Who is linking to your competition? Use Yahoo's "link:" service to see the back links of your competition. For example, type in "link:http://www.yourdomain.com" into Yahoo search without the quotes). Try to get links from the same sites as your direct competitors. Better yet, see if you can replace them! O) Submit Submit to five groups of directories: 1. Dmoz.org and Yahoo (local, such as Yahoo.co.uk, or Yahoo.ca, etc... if you can). 2. Find directories in your field and get into them. Pay if you must, but only if the price is reasonable. 3. Local directories that relate to your country or region. 4. Any other directories that would be appropriate. 5. If you are targeting the local market, make sure that you are in the Yellow Pages and Superpages (because search engines use these listings to power local searches) P) Blog Start a blog about your industry and write a new entry at least once a week. Allow your visitors to comment or, better yet, write their own entries. This will create even more content on your site and will keep people coming back regularly to see what is new. Q) Links from other sites Simply submit your website to appropriate sites, asking that they link to your site as a reference because it will benefit their visitors. Don't spend too much time on this, if your content is good and original, they will find you and link to you naturally. Remember that Linking is Queen (www.redcarpetweb.com/promotion/0409.html#feature). Stay away from reciprocal linking, links farms, link scams, and any other unnatural links. They may not necessarily hurt you, but Google tracks when you get a link, how long you have had a link, who links to the site that links to you, where you live, what you had for breakfast, and more (not really... but kind of). R) Statistics Make sure your server has a good statistics program. Use it! If you don't have access to a good program, then pay for one. Without the knowledge of who is coming to your site, from where, and how often, you will be missing out on some essential tools to improve your site. S) Pay-per-click (PPC) Sign up for Google AdWords and Yahoo Search Marketing. Spend money getting people to your site. Use it for branding too. This will create a steady flow of visitors to your site, and will make your site more accessible to your potential clients. You don't have to be #1, you don't even have to be #5... just make sure you are on the first page of search results for most of your keyphrases, when the cost is right. T) Look ahead Stay informed of what is coming up in your market. If a new product will be out next season, write about it now. Take advantage of being a first mover. The search engines, and linkers, will reward you. U) Articles Write an article once every week and get it published in as many online publications as you can (with a link back to your site). Include the article on your site. Not only will this create many links to your site, but it will also get people to click to your site, and most importantly you will become an expert in the eyes of your visitors. They may even begin looking for your site by querying your name! V) Study your traffic After 30 to 90 days you will have enough results to analyze in your statistics program. Go over them with a fine toothed comb. Get the answers to these questions: - Where are your visitors coming from? - Which search engines do they use? - What queries do they type in? - What pages on your site do they visit the most? - What are the entry pages on your site? - What are the exit pages? - What path do they follow when they browse your site? Use this information to tweak your site. - Use the most popular page to encourage the visitors to make you money. - Adjust the paths they use to send them where you want them. - Figure out why they leave from the exit pages. Also, see what search terms people use to find you, and fine tune your keyphrases. If you targeted "green widgets", but your visitors are finding you with the query "green leather widgets", then start creating content about "leather widgets"! W) Verify your submissions After 3-4 months, check that you got into Dmoz.org and all of the other directories that you submitted to. If you have not been included, then submit again, or better yet, write a polite email to the editor and ask why. Also, find any new directories that would be worthy of your submittal time and submit to them. X) RSS feeds RSS (Real Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) is becoming a powerful tool for Internet marketers. You can quickly and easily add fresh content to your website. Article feeds are updated frequently, so you can give your visitors (and the search engines) what they want - fresh content! You can use RSS to promote any new content, such as new pages, articles, blogs, press releases, and more! Y) Press releases A press release is a written communication that you submit to journalists in the media (newspapers, radio, television, magazines) which are used to make announcements that are newsworthy. Create press releases announcing publication of any new articles or new company information or products. If it is interesting/original enough, a journalist may pick it up and write an article about it. Before you know it, your website address may get published in the NY Times. Z) Keep your content fresh Remember to write a new page every 2-3 days. I only mentioned it briefly, but it is probably the most important point in this article. Keep writing! Without fresh content, your site will gradually drop in the search engine results. To stay on top, your content has to be the most up-to-date, freshest, and most interesting and original content in your field. They were unhappy with several different urls all linking to the same site showing up in their sponsored advertising search results and said that they would only be showing one single url . The highest bidder with the best clickthrough rate in the results would not only get pole position but the only listing. Why did Google implement this policy? To stop duplication of ads leading to the same merchant when affiliates bid on the same keyword. This is to ensure a diversity of ads in the results and more probably although not stated by Google, to stop the pay per click ads losing their effectiveness. As each ad would now go through to a different url, one user would be more inclined to click through on more of the results listed. As a result, Google will also be removing the url which used to have to be included in each ad. How does this affect the work from home affiliate? As there is now only one spot per url, then you will be bidding with all the other affiliates or even the merchant and you will need to have the most effective clickthrough campaign to get a listing. Now more than ever the importance of landing pages will come into play. By creating redirection pages that have a different url to the affiliate link you can still bid on the same keywords and have a unique url. Now, if you can get the SEO of the page right and find other affiliates selling a competitor’s product who will exchange links, or better yet still pay for a link on your landing page, then you could get your foot firmly planted in the door.
